The Road Map To Peace

People everywhere need inner peace. They need directions. They need the road map to peace.

How do I know this? My recent Google search on “finding peace” found 187,000,000 results. Facebook, Instagram, and Pinterest have impressive numbers also.

Looking For Peace In All The Wrong Places

Sadly, many of the websites, blogs, books, and experts have only part of the truth. All of the following are important but incomplete:

  • loving yourself
  • meditation
  • relaxation
  • listening to your heart.

In a court of law, witnesses are sworn to “Tell the truth, the whole truth, and nothing but the truth”. Without all of the truth, the jury will come to the wrong conclusions.
So it is with inner peace. Unless we embrace all of the truth, we can only hope for a temporary, “pseudo peace”, if that.

Hiding From The Truth

Yet others choose not to seek inner peace at all. Instead, they try to drown their lack of peace with drugs, alcohol, sex, binge eating, and more. They attempt to escape their negative and painful feelings.

People are clearly in need of peace. The fact that we are flawed humans requires that we find it from someone greater than ourselves. Let me assure you that there is a road map to peace, and it is yours for the taking.

My Story, Your Story

Have you ever felt that life has thrown you off course? Have you ever asked God, “Why is this happening?” Have you ever felt any of the following:

  • Helpless, hopeless
  • Hurt, unloved
  • Fearful, incompetent
  • Discouraged, lost
  • Alone, no one understands
  • Overwhelmed, worried

I have experienced all these feelings at one time or another and they were usually the result of other people’s actions. I have been abandoned and abused. I have been overlooked for promotions and had other people take credit for my work. I have had loved ones fight disease and die. And yes, I have asked, “Why is this happening?”

If you have asked this question, read on.

The Roadmap To Peace: When Life Throws You Off Course

Our lives are filled with “navigating” through situations that slow us down, stop us temporarily, or completely prevent us from moving forward. These moments in life can cause disappointment, anxiety, or deep emotional pain. And they can completely disrupt our inner peace if we let them.

One of the most painful moments in my life was when I was abandoned by my husband after eighteen years of marriage. My fifteen-year-old daughter also left for several months.

  • I felt alone
  • It seemed like I was a failure because my marriage had collapsed despite all my years of effort.
  • I felt incompetent because up to that point I had never managed my finances or health insurance.
  • In order to support myself, I needed to complete a re-certification course in nursing.
  • All in all, I was terrified.
  • And did I mention that I didn’t know anything about car maintenance?

It felt like my life, the life I was familiar with, had come to an end. Thankfully my parents allowed me to stay with them and more importantly, they cared for me, making sure that I ate and got exercise and fresh air. They also listened as I bounced ideas off them.

There was no peace during that time over 30 years ago. Where was my road map when I needed it?

While detours, bumps, and stop signs in the road of life can disrupt us and throw us off course, God has given us directions to peace. Hey, I can see a road sign and I believe it says “Inner peace ahead!”

The Road Map To Peace: Where Do I Start?

Are you ready to begin the journey to peace? Let’s talk about what you need to pack.

First you need a teachable spirit. Jesus often spoke in parables. At the end of many of them, he would say,

“He who has ears to hear let him hear.” Matthew 11:15

This was because many people were not really interested in the truth. In fact, many hated the truth.

Second, you will need something to write in. This will be a journal of what you learn along the way. When bumps come along in the road of life, a journal will be an important tool to go back to and read. It will help remind you of times when God was there with you, helping you.

Third, you need some friends who love Jesus. We all need encouragement.

Finally, but most importantly, the roadmap to peace begins with knowing Jesus, the author of peace. Without Him, everything else is just an intellectual activity. Jesus is where peace begins. Jesus is known as the Prince of Peace. He said:

“I am leaving you with a gift–peace of mind and heart. And the peace I give is a gift the world cannot give. So don’t be troubled or afraid.” John 17:27 New Living Translation
