Sometimes life is stressful. It’s easy to have an anxious heart when we go through difficult times. In those moments, God’s word can be an incredible source of peace and strength.

The Bible is filled with powerful verses that remind us of God’s steadfast love and His promise to be with us through our times of stress.

We will cover some of my favorite Bible verses for stress relief. We’ll also look at practical ways to apply these verses to your life, so you can experience the peace of God that surpasses all understanding.

What stressful situations are you facing today?

Let’s be honest. Sometimes life can be a real testing of your faith. Maybe you’re dealing with

  • financial struggles
  • health challenges, either for yourself or a loved one
  • relationship issues with a spouse, family members, or at work

Whatever your stressful situation may be, know that you are not alone. We all face challenges and difficulties in this life. It is human nature to feel overwhelmed or anxious at times.

But here’s the good news: the Word of God is where we can find perfect peace.

How did Jesus deal with stress?

Even Jesus could not escape stressful situations. He experienced rejection, persecution, and the weight of carrying out His divine mission.

In one instance we are told that He was “overwhelmed with sorrow to the point of death.” (Matthew 26:38:42). Few of us have experienced the stress of hard times to that extent.

In that moment of intense anguish, Jesus didn’t turn inward or try to handle it all on His own. Instead, He poured out His heart to God in prayer.

Jesus knew that true strength and peace could only be found in His Father’s presence. He didn’t shy away from the tough times He was facing. Instead, He embraced them with a spirit of surrender under the mighty hand of God. 

How faith in God helps anxiety and stress

When we’re going through a stressful season, it’s easy to feel like we’re drowning. Having faith in God is like being thrown a life preserver in the middle of our storm.

Placing our trust in God doesn’t mean that our problems will magically disappear, but it does give us something to hang onto.

Faith in God also helps us to shift our perspective. Instead of being consumed by the temporary troubles of this world, we can fix our eyes on the eternal promises of God.

When we are feeling weak and overwhelmed, faith in God also provides us with

  • a source of strength that goes beyond our own limited abilities.
  • the surpassing power of the Holy Spirit
  • the courage to face each day no matter how chaotic it may be.

The best Bible verses for stress relief

When the pressures of life are overwhelming, there’s nothing quite like turning to the Word of God for reassurance.

“Therefore I tell you, do not worry about your life, what you will eat or drink; or about your body, what you will wear… Who of you by worrying can add a single hour to your life?” New Living Translation

Here, Jesus reminds us that worrying doesn’t change our circumstances or increase our span of life.  Instead, He encourages us to trust in God’s provision, just as He cares for the birds of the air and the flowers of the field.

Luke states it a little differently.

“Can all your worries add a single moment to your life? And if worry can’t accomplish a little thing like that, what’s the use of worrying over bigger things?” NLT

When we are tempted to worry about our situation we need to stop and pray. That includes:

  • Asking for what we need
  • Thanking Him for what He has done and will do
  • Trust God because we only see a small part of a much bigger picture.

“When doubts filled my mind, your comfort gave me renewed hope and cheer.” NLT

Knowing that King David and others in the Bible struggled with anxiety and stress helps me to understand I’m not alone. I can find my comfort in God just like they did.

“Don’t be afraid, for I am with you. Don’t be discouraged, for I am your God. I will strengthen you and help you. I will hold you up with my victorious right hand.” Isaiah 41:10, NLT

“This is my command – be strong and courageous! Do not be afraid or discouraged. For the Lord your God is with you wherever you go.” Joshua 1:9, NLT

Afraid could mean,

  • stressed,
  • anxious,
  • overwhelmed,
  • depressed,
  • discouraged

But we are told not to fear. Why? Because God Is With Us. These are great Bible verses for stress relief.

“Give your burdens to the Lord, and he will take care of you. He will not permit the godly to slip and fall.” NLT

What an invitation. When it feels like we just can’t go on, we are encouraged to go to God with our weary souls and claim God’s promises in our times of need.

Praise God, when we are weak from facing stressful situations, Jesus Christ is our strength.

A prayer for stress relief

Heavenly Father, I come to You in my time of need feeling overwhelmed and burdened by the weight of my circumstances. My mind is filled with anxious thoughts, and I’m struggling to find peace.

But Your Word reminds me that I don’t have to carry these heavy burdens alone. You are the Lord of peace and have promised to be my ever-present help in times of trouble, and the strength of my heart. 

So, right now, I choose to surrender my worries and fears to You. I release the grip of emotional stress and the cares of my heart that have been holding me captive in my daily life. I embrace the perfect peace that can only be found in Your presence.

Help me to trust in Your sovereign plan. Remind me that You are in control and that You have good things in store for me.

Fill me with Your strength and courage, so that I can face each day with a spirit of confidence. May Your perfect love cast out every fear and doubt that tries to take root in my heart.

Thank You for the gift of Your steadfast love and faithfulness. In the name of Jesus, my Prince of Peace, I pray, Amen.

Sometimes, the process of finding true peace involves surrendering our expectations and allowing God to work in His perfect timing.
