25 Comforting Bible Verses For Broken Hearts

Is there ever any good news when your heart is broken? Many people would say “no.”

Just recently a couple that I know were on vacation when she contracted an infection and within 4 days she was gone.

The widower is part of our church and the funeral was as positive as can be expected during a situation like this. But he and the rest of the family needed comforting Bible verses for broken hearts.

Then 8 months ago, another family in the church lost their 20-year-old son. Life isn’t supposed to be that way. Parents shouldn’t have to bury their children, but it happens.

So many scenarios can cause broken hearts. Divorce, abandonment, abuse, and death are the most common. It happens to all of us at some point in time.

The good news is that we can experience healing through the God of all comfort. He is an ever-present help in times of trouble.

What does God say about a broken heart?

Are you going through hard times right now? God cares deeply about your time of need. Listen to the word of God.

“The Lord is near to the brokenhearted and saves the crushed in spirit” Psalm 34:18 ESV (English Standard Version)

Photo of a broken heart being laced together and 2 comforting Bible verses for broken hearts.

Notice the description of a broken heart, “Crushed.” In some translations, it is “broken spirit.”

Is that how you are feeling? Crushed and broken? God understands. That is why these Scriptures use these word pictures. But there is more.

“He heals the brokenhearted and binds up their wounds.” Psalm 147:3 ESV

Not only does God care about your broken heart today, He wants to take all those pieces and put them together with the bandages of God’s love and God’s peace.

Picture in your mind God’s hands gently holding and binding your heart. We can’t do that in our own strength. We need Jesus, the great physician.

The best illustration of the grief that God feels when we are hurting is found in the New Testament.

“When Jesus therefore saw her weeping, and the Jews also weeping which came with her, he groaned in the spirit, and was troubled. And said, ‘Where have ye laid him?’ They said unto him, ‘Lord, come and see.’ Jesus wept. Then said the Jews, ‘Behold how he (Jesus) loved him!’ ” John 11:33-36 KJV (King James Version) (explanation added)

The Bible tells Christians to “rejoice with those who rejoice, weep with those who weep.” Our burdens are easier to bear when we know someone shares our grief.

Dear sister in Christ, know that you are not alone. God is right there with you, feeling and sharing in your time of heartbreak.

“Blessed be God, even the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of mercies, and the God of all comfort;” 2 Corinthians 1:3 ESV

What to read in the Bible if you are heartbroken

The Bible has many words of encouragement for the moments of your life when you think you can’t possibly survive the situational storms that threaten to sink you.

Here is a list of Bible verses to help you be aware of God’s presence when you are tempted to feel alone.

Bible verses for broken hearts after the death of loved ones

One moment you have them and the next they are gone. Sometimes it is after a long illness, and sometimes it happens suddenly.

Whether you were expecting it or not, the death of someone you love is so painful. All the former things you used to do together come to a screeching halt. You feel like part of you is missing.

The Bible gives numerous words of encouragement above and beyond the Scriptures already mentioned.

Psalm 23:4

“Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil, for you are with me; your rod and your staff, they comfort me.” ESV

This is one of the beautiful Bible verses for broken hearts.

The curly part of a shepherd’s staff was to reach into ravines or brambles and pull a sheep to safety. The rod was to scare off predators.

God is with you in this difficult time with His rod and staff. He will help drive off the predator of depression and lift you to safety.

Revelation 21:4

“He will wipe away every tear from their eyes, and death shall be no more, neither shall there be mourning, nor crying, nor pain anymore, for the former things have passed away.”

Be assured that our tears will not last forever. This is one of the great Bible verses for broken hearts.

1 Thessalonians 4:13-14

But we do not want you to be uninformed, brothers (or sisters), about those who are asleep (died), that you may not grieve as others do who have no hope. For since we believe that Jesus died and rose again, even so, through Jesus, God will bring with him those who have fallen asleep.” ESV (explanation added)

Having an eternal hope of life forever with Jesus changes everything. I am so thankful for these Bible verses for broken hearts.

2 Corinthians 5:8

“Yes, we are of good courage, and we would rather be away from the body and at home with the Lord.”

When our loved ones take their last breath, they enter the presence of God, the one they have committed their life to. As much as we will miss them, this is not “goodbye” but “see you later.”

Matthew 5:4

“Blessed are those who mourn, for they shall be comforted.” ESV

God wants to comfort you. Will you let Him?

Bible verses for broken hearts after abandonment

What does the Bible say about those of us who have been abandoned?

  • For some, it happened when a spouse left you for another.
  • Others were given up for adoption as babies and still wonder why.
  • Some children saw their fathers leave and never return home. You might be one of them.

If you have been left behind by a significant other, take the following Bible verses to heart.

Psalm 27:10

“For my father and my mother have forsaken me, but the Lord will take me in.” ESV

This is a promise for those who love God.

John 14:18

“I will not leave you as orphans; I will come to you.” ESV

This is a direct quote from Jesus.

Ephesians 1:5

“He predestined us for adoption to himself as sons (and daughters) through Jesus Christ, according to the purpose of his will,” ESV (explanation added)

Being adopted by God into His family is a wonderful blessing.

Isaiah 49:15-16

“Can a woman forget her nursing child, that she should have no compassion on the son (or daughter) of her womb? Even these may forget, yet I will not forget you.” ESV

God will not abandon us like some parents do to their children. If you were left behind by one or both parents, this is one of the Bible verses for broken hearts written just for you.

Lamentations 3:22-23

“The steadfast love of the Lord never ceases: his mercies never come to an end; they are new every morning; great is your faithfulness.” ESV.

How grateful I am personally for God’s faithfulness when others were not in my life. He will always love me even when others don’t.

Bible verses for broken hearts after all traumas

Psalm 46:1

“God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble.”

This is one of the great bible verses for broken hearts. We often feel like we will collapse after losing a parent, spouse, or child. It is God’s strength that helps us move forward.

Jeremiah 29:11

“For I know the plans I have for you, declares the Lord, plans for welfare and not for evil, to give you a future and a hope.” ESV

Do you believe God’s plans for you are good? Even when you can’t see it, good things are waiting in your future either here on Earth or in Heaven.

Isaiah 41:10

“fear not, for I am with you; be not dismayed, for I am your God; I will strengthen you, I will help you, I will uphold you with my righteous right hand.” ESV

When we feel like our knees will buckle from the pain in our hurting hearts God holds us up. What a wonderful Lord we have, and what a wonderful Bible verse for broken hearts.

Psalm 73:26

“My flesh and my heart may fail, but God is the strength of my heart and my portion forever.” ESV

Proverbs 3:5-6

“Trust in the Lord with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding. In all thy ways acknowledge him, and he shall direct thy paths.”

Once we get through the shock of what happened, this Bible verse for broken hearts helps us begin planning for the future as God will direct us.

Philippians 4:6-7

“Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God. And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.” ESV

We need peace after loss. In your prayers, don’t forget to thank God for all you still have. While life changes, God does not.

If you are having a hard time feeling gratitude right now, thank God for the things about Him that never change.

Peace is a direct result of thankfulness.

Psalm 55:22, 1 Peter 5:7

“Cast your burden on the Lord, and he will sustain you;” ESV “Casting all your anxieties on him, because he cares for you.” ESV

Keep talking to God about your pain. He is a good listener.

Romans 8:38-39

“For I am sure that neither death nor life, nor angels nor rulers, nor things present nor things to come, nor powers,  nor height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus our Lord.” ESV

The love of Christ is such a wonderful gift. And unlike human gifts, it does not deteriorate with time. It has a lifetime warranty here on earth, and on into eternity. What a wonderful promise.

Romans 8:28

“And we know that for those who love God all things work together for good for those who are called according to his purpose.” ESV

Some day we will understand how God used our pain for something good.

Romans 12:19

“Beloved, never avenge yourselves, but leave it[a] to the wrath of God, for it is written, “Vengeance is mine, I will repay, says the Lord.” ESV

Having a broken heart often means that someone hurt us. Human nature is to get even, but the will of God is that we let it go and let Him take care of the offender.

Even in the life of Jesus, there was no revenge, though He had justification for it. Jesus let the Heavenly Father take care of it.

When we follow these instructions with God’s help, it takes the pressure off us at a time when we are already stressed from emotional pain.

Psalm 56:8

“You keep track of all my sorrows. You have collected all my tears in your bottle. You have recorded each one in your book.” NLT

What is a strong prayer for a broken heart?

Whenever we include Scripture in our prayers, they become strong and powerful. Why? Because we are speaking God’s language. We are also much more likely to pray according to God’s will. So you can pray something like this:

“Father God,

My heart feels shattered like a puzzle with missing pieces. It is such a heavy burden to carry. I am so weary.

Lord you have promised to be near to the brokenhearted. Help me feel your loving presence. I trust you to bind my wounds in ways that only you can do.

Help me to let go of the hurts inflicted on me by others. Help me to forgive and trust you to make things right.

O God, thank you that you understand and promise to work wonders in ways that I can’t even imagine. You say that your plans for me are good and I trust you, even though I do not understand right now.

Thank you, Heavenly Father, that I can talk to you about my pain. Thank you that you have given so many Bible verses for broken hearts.

Right now it is a comfort to know that all of my tears are important to you, that you see each one and collect them so they won’t be lost.

Help me remember that you are always with me and will direct me as I try to figure out how to move forward.

Truly you are a loving, faithful, compassionate, and caring Savior.

In Jesus’ name, Amen.
